A bacterium has no eyes and no ears, yet it finds food and flees poison — by reading the molecules around it. That reading, chemoreception, is the only kind of perception shared across every kingdom of life, and the one thought to have come first. Long before there was a brain to see or hear, there was a cell that could smell its world.

More of us is devoted to smell than to anything else.

Evolution kept investing. The olfactory receptors are the largest gene family in the human genome — close to a thousand genes, more than any other sense commands. Many now sit silent, classed as pseudogenes; roughly four hundred still work. But the sheer size of the library is a record of how long, and how deeply, life has depended on reading chemistry.
