A sweet scent is worth more than a good name —
for gold can launder a reputation’s shame;
yet the fragrance of breath will play no such game,
fashioned by conduct alone, and never by claim.
The breath of life is our existence’s aim —
notwithstanding King Solomon’s claim.

after Ecclesiastes 7:1, which says the reverse

About · SHEMIM

Our natural scent cannot be faked. It is a byproduct of how we live. Some mask it with perfumes.

SHEMIM is an independent educational research institute. Our work begins from something anyone can notice: a healthy body smells different from an unhealthy one. The breath we exhale and the scent we give off carry a continuous, honest signal of how well we are, and outside of acute medical care, almost none of it is read. A perfume can mask that signal; it cannot change what lies beneath.

What SHEMIM does

SHEMIM studies how to read that signal, non-invasively, continuously, and in a way the individual owns, and how to turn it into a measure of well-being a person can actually track.

Building the science to make that trustworthy is the near-term work.

The oldest language

Before the eye, before the ear, life could already smell. Chemistry is the first language living things ever spoke — and they speak it still.

Bacteria count themselves by it, falling silent or acting all at once when enough voices answer. A moth reads a mate on the wind from a mile off — not from one molecule but from the exact ratio of several; the blend is the word. We don't borrow these as proof — a bacterium's vote says nothing about a person's health. We take them as a reminder: reading the world, and each other, through chemistry is not exotic. It is the deepest thing life does. SHEMIM asks what we have left unread in our own.

The mask and the message

We reach for perfume to present a self we would like to be — yet the honest signal still leaks. A fragrance blends with our own scent more than it buries it; people can still tell us apart underneath, and we tend to choose perfumes that complement our natural scent rather than mask it.

Up close — a handshake, a kiss — others sample that scent, often without knowing. We suspect that masking it can quietly hide the essence a partner is trying to read; the science has not settled that, but the signal reaching them is not in doubt.

The scent of a life

A newborn's scent is made to be wanted — it reaches straight past thought into the part of a mother's brain that rewards and bonds. The body's first message to the world is written in scent.

It changes as we grow — a fainter, particular note settles in with the years, and how we live tilts where it goes. We meet that change the way we meet most things: by covering it. SHEMIM's wager runs the other way — that a signal this honest is meant to be read, not buried.

Mission · Vision · Approach

Mission

To hand every person a compass only they can read — their own scent — so that how to live well is no longer dictated by doctor, guru, or authority, but gauged, breath by breath, by the one living the life.

Vision

A world where health is no longer prescribed but perceived — where authority gives way to a signal each person reads in their own breath; each their own instrument, reading and tuning their own well-being, so that individual flourishing lifts the shared air we all breathe.

Approach

We study scent as the honest readout of the whole person — body and mind — and build open, independently checkable tools to gauge it: to read what the signal reveals, and to reshape it through the one set of forces we can change. Scent is set by genetics, evolution, and epigenetics — the first two inherited, the third how we choose to live. We teach the method, never obedience to it.

The wider work

Harmony is not forced. It emerges.

The best things — health, trust, harmony — cannot be forced into being. They emerge when the conditions are right. So SHEMIM's wider work is about those conditions: how the body, its environment, and society form one connected system, and what helps that system come back into balance.

Health, on this view, is a living coherence between our rhythms, our surroundings, and how we choose to live — more than the mere absence of illness.

How SHEMIM works

Two things, kept honestly distinct.

Transdisciplinary by conviction, not fashion. SHEMIM draws on rigorous science and on the insight of contemplative traditions. Both matter; neither is asked to prove the other.

What can be measured

Breath chemistry, microbial dynamics, biological rhythms. Signals we can capture, model, and test against evidence.

What carries meaning

The traditions that have read scent and breath for millennia. We let them provoke new questions, then hold those questions to evidence.

The name

SHEMIM שםים شميم

SHEMIM sits between the Hebrew shamayim (the heaven, the air we breathe) and the Farsi and Arabic šamīm (a sweet scent carried on the breeze). Two languages, one image: the air, and what it reveals. In the oldest telling, the breath of life was given through the nostrils (Genesis 2:7): the same channel SHEMIM studies.

A Sweet Fragrant Breeze.

Status · early-stage

SHEMIM is early. The work today is conceptual architecture and research design: a connected body of frameworks, not yet pilots, prototypes, or published results. We say so plainly, and we build in the open: we distinguish clearly between what evidence supports, what is inference, and what is still hypothesis.

A closing word

A sweet-smelling clay, one day in the bath, was handed me by a beloved. I asked: “Are you musk or ambergris? Your scent so intoxicates me.” It replied: “I was a worthless lump of mud, but I kept the company of a flower for a while. My companion's excellence worked on me; or else, I am the same dirt I always was.”

Saʿdi of Shiraz, Gulistan (13th c.)

The clay has a scent of its own — a plain one; what turns it sweet is the company it keeps. Set beside a flower, it draws that fragrance in and makes it its own. So do we: we are shaped by what we hold close — the air we breathe, the places we live, and, above all, the company we choose. That choosing is ours. SHEMIM studies not only the body, but the conditions around it.
